What is a cover letter & how do I write one?

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

A cover letter is probably the most underrated part of a job application. Those of you that have applied for jobs before may know what it is. However, a lot of us don't actually know what it is for. We are here to explain and tell you how to write one effectively because a good quality cover letter can make a big difference!

So, what is a cover letter?

When it comes to applying for jobs, a cover letter is the perfect way to help set yourself apart. It's is a one-page document that you submit with your CV to a job application. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself and outline why you are interested in the job. It's important to use this document as an opportunity to sell yourself and encourage the employer to read your CV.

What needs to be in it?

The aim of a cover letter is to formally introduce yourself. Like your CV, it needs to be professional in both style and substance. Your cover letter should be well-presented, concise and to-the-point.

You should include...

At the beginning of your cover letter, put your name and contact details. You don't have to give your address, but you do need to include your email and phone number.

Next, the cover letter needs to formally address the employer.

You then need to state the job you wish to apply for. Remember to use a different cover letter for each job application because it will need to be adapted to fit with the specific company and role.

Your cover letter needs to include a brief summary about how your skills and experiences match the job description. After listing your skills and experience, you should explain why these mean you're suited to the job.

Make sure you sign off your cover letter formally. This can be ‘Yours sincerely’ (if you know the name of the hiring manager), or ‘Yours faithfully’ (if you don’t), followed by your name.

Any last tips?

If you can, find out the name of the person you are sending your cover letter to and address them. This is so important and a big deal for a lot of employers. Try not to address your letter ‘To whom it may concern’. Find out the name of the person who will read your application. If you find out the person's name, don't use their first name. Use either ‘Mr’ or ‘Ms’ and their last name instead.

It's as easy as that! Putting a little bit more effort into your job application by creating a cover letter is really important. So next time you are applying for jobs, don't forget to submit a cover letter too!
